Name: Upala - "precious stone," from Sanskrit; opalus from Latin

Nature:  Voids in volcanic rhyolite(from gas pockets and cracks) were filled in with silica-rich saturated water (extruded from the water rich rhyolite, or through water percolation). As these carefully, slowly dehydrated, they vitrified (sealed) the voids and cracks together to form the opal inside. The red colors often come from oxidized iron and/or magnesium ions in trace amounts.
